Studying Guitar at Sonanta
Although our expert teachers base their teaching methods on time-tested pedagogical methods, their curriculi are not fixed. We believe strongly in the importance of creating your our own musical voice by exploring multiple guitar styles, composing, and supplememting your teacher's curriculum with your own music selection. This approach provides you with a fun, challening, and organized method that allows you to improve your technical, creative, and expresive skills without being boxed into an inflexible curriculum.
Every instructor at Sonanta has at least 20 years of professional experience teaching classical, flamenco, flamenco-jazz, Latin, jazz and/or Latin-jazz guitar.
Diego Alonso is the director, principle instructor, and coach at the Sonanta School of Music. He has taught over 10,000 private lessons and has given lectures, clinics, master classes, workshops, and lectures on flamenco in over 500 universities, elementary schools, high schools, and universities, nationally and internationally. Diego Alonso graduated with highest honors in Flamenco Guitar Performance from the Fundación Cristina Herren de Arte Flamenco (Seville, Spain) and holds a Masters Degree in Flamencology (pedagogy, ethnomusicology and musicology specialized in flamenco) from the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (Barcelona, Spain). In addition, Diego has studied classical guitar with Peter Aglinskas (Loyola U. Chicago) & Denis Azabagic (Roosevelt U.), as well as Jazz with David Bloom (Bloom School of Jazz) and John Moulder (Roosevelt and Northwestern U.). Diego has a Bachelor of Science degree in research psychology and uses his deep interest in the psychology of learning, skill acquisition, and expertise to coach & teach guitar. Students are expected to commit to practicing 4-6 days/week for an absolute minimum of 20 minutes/day and a maximum of 4 hours/day (depending on each student's goal). Daily practice schedules will be based on your goals and current musical level. Our instructors will help you develop an effective practice method that will guarantee you results and students are expected to apply these methods in every practice session.
Currently the Sonanta School of Music is a non-degree program of study and is not yet accredited. For the time being, lessons with Sonanta instructors are strictly independent. That being said, please speak to your teacher and academic advisors to see if you can obtain credits for your studies with Sonanta teachers.
